Story Notes:
Ya, first one I've ever written.

Odd, thought Ronon. He had been through the Stargate so many times, but he still felt a thrill every time he stepped through. Something new was waiting on the other side, something to keep his mind busy. Something to keep him from thinking about her...his Melena. It had been nine years, but he still loved her. He couldn't let go...not of her...not of his wife.

He took a deep breath and followed his friends through the gate. It had been three years since he first joined Colonel Sheppard's team. At first they were just a team he could fight the Wraith with, but after a very short time, they were friends he would die for.

Today the team was on their way to one of the many planets in the Pegasus Galaxy they had not yet visited. Establishing good relations with all the planets was only one of the missions of Atlantis, but with the Wraith being uncharacteristically quiet, Colonel Carter had decided it was a good time to continue with their good will mission. Very little was in the Ancient Database about this new planet. Rodney's scans of the planet had indicated a settlement about an hour's walk from the Stargate.

"Why do we have to go to another primitive settlement?? I am much more useful in Atlantis, not trading for hand-made baskets!!" Rodney complained.

"Rodney, perhaps you could think of this as a welcome break." Teyla always had something good to say about every situation. That was something Ronon had always liked about her. She was the heart of the group. Rodney was the brain, annoying as he was. And Colonel Sheppard, well, he was the tactical expertise. Ronon knew full well what he was. Muscle. He didn't do well talking, he knew nothing about Rodney's technology, but he could kill a man in half a second.

"Wow, this place is...hilly," commented Sheppard. Dr. McKay grunted in exasperation as he huffed up the hill they were climbing. Even Teyla and Sheppard, fit as they were, seemed to be running short on breath. They continued on in silence for just over an hour. As they reached the top of the latest hill, they stopped in awe. At the bottom of the hill was a town. But it wasn't just a town, it was beautifully built. The architecture was primitive, but beautiful. Each building complemented the one next to it, and everything seemed to be built around the plant-life that had already been there. The noon sun lit the village beautifully, and the team couldn't help but to stop and admire it for a minute.

"Let's get going. Carter wants us to check in by five, so we've got three and a half hours before we need to be heading back," Sheppard said as he started down the slope. "Let's hope it's as friendly as it looks."

As they neared the village, Ronon noted that the town was built to be easily defended. Each house had a flat roof, and the houses on the outside of town were shorter than the ones further in.

"Nice strategy," he pointed out to Sheppard. Sheppard just grunted and kept moving.

Before they reached the edge of the village, a party came out to meet the team. There were two very beautiful girls, and one man.

"Hello, and welcome to our city!" called out one of the girls. She had long black hair, and every movement she made seemed to indicate that she was the one in charge. "I am Gwen, this is my sister Eve. He is Salim."

Eve was just as lovely as her sister, but her features were sharper, and her hair was cropped short, just barely reaching mid-down her neck. The man was dressed plainly, and avoided eye contact.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Colonel John Sheppard, this is Teyla Emmagan, Ronon Dex, and Dr. Rodney McKay. We're making our way around the galaxy, trying to establish relations with the different people."

"And I'm sure our leader would love to meet you. We received word that you were seen in the hills, so she is waiting to see you. Please come with me."

They followed Gwen through the village. As they walked, she and her sister pointed out various points of interests. An inn, a tavern, the well. Salim trailed behind, never saying a word, or looking up. Ronon thought it was odd, but they seemed only to talk to Teyla. Even Gwen's introduction had been directed at Teyla, though Sheppard was clearly the one in charge of the group.
