"Cameron?" he asked, even though he knew he was alone. Every other time he's said Cameron's name he's come running.
And this time was no different.
"Hey," Cameron said softly, "You're awake."
John nodded, eyeing the jug of water Cameron was holding.
John nodded again, because he'd forgotten how to speak.
Cam poured a glass and added a straw, holding it to John's lips so he can drink. John was thirsty, but he couldn't seem to drink more than a fraction of the glass.
"The Docs said to take it slow," Cam filled in, "You've been asleep for over twenty-four hours."
John nodded, kind of expecting it, "And you stay the whole time." John's never had anyone care so much, and he couldn't help but marvel at how lucky he was.
"I did," Cameron took a seat on the chair beside his bed, "Internal bleeding," he offered. "I told them I found you unconscious and I'm an old high school buddy. Figured it was easier to explain. Tell them you don't remember anything and they'll buy it, they told me it was a big probability."
John nodded, "Thanks."
"Oh, not mute anymore?" Cameron grinned.
John shook his head with a tiny smile – a real one. "Nope."
As it turned out John really wanted to talk, he started firing totally random and uncomfortable questions in Cameron's direction, who, to his credit, never hesitated before an answer.
"Do you prefer the term boyfriend or partner?"
Cameron shrugged, "Partner, with you. What about you?"
"Partner," though husband might be nice some day.
Cameron coughed, "You know you just said that out loud, right?"
"Shit, Cam, I..."
"Oh, so I make one little slip up and we're back to Sheppard?"
Cameron laughed, "Nah, I just thought I'd use it as much as possible since you're gonna be a Mitchell one day."
John snorted, glad the tension was broken and all warm and fuzzy at the thought of being with Mitchell forever, "No way, you're gonna be a Sheppard."
"What? John Mitchell sounds way cooler than Cameron Sheppard."
"No it doesn't," John argued.
"Yes it does."
"No it doesn't."
"Fine," Cameron threw up his arms in defeat, "I'll be Cameron Mitchell-Sheppard and you can be John Sheppard-Mitchell, okay?!"
"Mitchell-Sheppard sounds better, mind if I put your name in front?"
"Mind if I tell you I love you again?"
Summary: Just a Cam/Shep drabble I pulled out of another story and decided made sense on its own
