It was five years before Atlantis learned to recharge ZPMs. They gated to a ravaged Earth, population decimated by Ori plagues and a SGC standing by will alone.
Atlantis had long since won her own peace, on the wings of a vengeance unacceptable to most. But she had the strength they needed, and Atlantis lent troops to defend her ancestral home.
If anyone noticed that Atlantis asked nothing in return, needed nothing in return, they ignored it. Protection was worth the price, at first, before they realized just how much their children had grown.
By then it was too late.
Summary: What if Atlantis had to rescue herself? (Dark AU from first season. Just playing around with some ideas for an AU, this is slightly darker than I'll probably go with something longer. Then again... *ponders*)
